Zamalek coach says league title not yet secure despite five-point lead

By:Ahram Online

Zamalek coach Moatamed Gamal rejected any notion that his side have already secured the Egyptian Premier League title after taking a five-point lead over Pyramids FC with a 1-0 victory in the Championship Group on Thursday.

A late winner from Brazilian winger Juan Bezerra earned Zamalek a hard-fought win, lifting them to 49 points, five clear of closest challengers Pyramids FC and Ahly, with four matches remaining.

“I knew the Pyramids match would be difficult,” Gamal told a post-match press conference. “The win brings Zamalek a step closer to the title, but I refuse any notion that the league title has already been decided.”

He urged his players to remain focused ahead of a demanding schedule, starting with Monday’s clash against ENPPI in the fourth round of the Championship Group.

“We have a tough match against ENPPI in three days. We will focus on the next game before thinking about the summit clash,” he said.

Gamal praised his squad’s efforts and the support of the fans, stressing the team’s determination to maintain momentum.

“I thank the players for their efforts, and I cannot find enough words to thank the supporters. We are working to make them happy and to win the league title,” he added.

The coach emphasized his players’ ability to manage expectations despite recent success. “The team can separate the joy of winning from the demands of upcoming matches.”

Reflecting on the Pyramids encounter, Gamal said he approached the game in phases to achieve the desired result, while underlining respect for all competitors in the title race.

“We respect all teams competing in the Championship Group,” he said.

Gamal also revealed that midfielder Mahmoud Bentayg is nursing a groin injury and will be assessed ahead of the ENPPI match, highlighting his importance to the squad.

Zamalek have four fixtures remaining this season, facing ENPPI, Ahly, Smouha, and Ceramica Cleopatra as they seek to secure the league crown.
