El-Sisi urges seizing opportunity for Middle East peace at G7 summit

By:Ahram Online

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Tuesday that the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel provides a model for the region, urging seizing what he described as the “opportunity” to achieve peace in the Middle East.

El-Sisi made the remarks during a session titled "Navigating Crises and Sustaining Stability in the Middle East" at the G7 Summit in France, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

The summit is being held in Évian from 15 to 17 June.

The session was convened with the participation of the heads of state of G7 member states; the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan, along with the Emirati and Qatari leaders, as well as the chiefs of the EU council and commission.

Addressing the meeting, El-Sisi outlined Egypt’s vision on regional developments, stressing the need to reach a comprehensive settlement to geopolitical crises in the region to ensure regional and global peace and stability.

The Israeli war in Gaza

El-Sisi said that while international attention has focused on the war on Iran, Israel has expanded the so-called "Yellow Line" in Gaza, increasing the territory under its control to about 70 percent of the strip and leaving Palestinians with roughly 30 percent.

He stressed that this approach must cease immediately, urging the expedited implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan that was approved by Israel.

He asserted that the situation requires an urgent action, calling for the swift implementation of a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump and approved by Israel.

The Gaza ceasefire agreement, signed during the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace in October 2025, followed intensive mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the US.

Under phase one of the agreement, Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire, a detainee exchange, increased humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the so-called “Yellow Line,” which left Israel controlling about 53 percent of Gaza at the time.

However, Israel has violated the deal, conducting daily strikes across Gaza, refusing to withdraw, and gradually expanding the area of the strip under its military occupation.

El-Sisi also warned against any annexation of the occupied West Bank, saying such actions must not be permitted.

He reiterated that a just and lasting settlement to the Palestinian cause can only be achieved through the two-state solution, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian State along the June, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He praised Trump's efforts to secure the ceasefire in Gaza and a recent agreement to halt the war with Iran, saying the US president had played a key role in efforts to resolve regional conflicts.

He also underlined the urgent necessity of avoiding and preventing any endeavours that seek to undermine the agreements successfully brokered by Trump, expressing hope that these deals would usher in a new era of regional de-escalation and conflict resolution.

El-Sisi confirmed Egypt’s readiness to exert every effort, in collaboration with regional and global partners, to reach sustainable solutions to pending issues.

Echoing El-Sisi’s remarks, several participating leaders reaffirmed the necessity of settling the Palestinian cause, transitioning to the second phase of Gaza’s agreement to end the war in the strip, and establishing a Palestinian State living side-by-side with Israel.

Israel’s war on Lebanon

Addressing the situation in Lebanon, President El-Sisi stressed that Israel’s failure to withdraw from the five locations it occupies in Lebanon, despite the requirements of the Lebanese ceasefire agreement concluded in November 2024, has exacerbated the situation.

During the meeting, the participating leaders criticized the Israeli Prime Minister and his government’s practices in the region, particularly in Lebanon and against the Palestinians.

They emphasized that Israel must stop targeting Lebanon, withdraw from Lebanese territory, and empower the Lebanese government, while exploring the potential deployment of an international peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

Egypt’s solidarity with the Gulf states

During the meeting, El-Sisi also reaffirmed Egypt’s categorical rejection and condemnation of the unjustified aggressions against the Arab Gulf states, reiterating Cairo’s full solidarity with and support for the Gulf nations in safeguarding their security and stability.

He reaffirmed that the security of the Arab nations is an integral part of Egypt’s national security, stressing the vital need to forge a consensus on regional collective security arrangements that accommodate the concerns of all parties.

He further reaffirmed that establishing stability in the region requires all parties to adopt a responsible approach founded upon respect for the sovereignty of states and the rejection of any aggressions or interference in the internal affairs of states.

Such an approach, he noted, also necessitates the strict commitment to the rules of international law, particularly regarding the management of transboundary resources, and respect to water security, safety of shipping lanes, and energy security.

In addition, President El-Sisi said that such an approach also necessitates the end of occupation, and the preservation of national institutions, as well as the restriction of the possession of arms to legitimate institutions.

Middle East wars’ repercussions

The president also tackled the issue of freedom of international maritime navigation, underscoring the absolute necessity of ensuring the unhindered and safe passage of vessels through international waterways in accordance with international law.

He also rejected any disruptions or endeavours aimed at altering their legal status, the statement added.

The talks also addressed the issue of energy infrastructure, highlighting the negative repercussions imposed by regional developments on global trade and energy supplies.

Additionally, El-Sisi affirmed the need to establish a zone free of nuclear and mass destruction weapons in the Middle East.

He also urged the comprehensive and non-discriminatory implementation of the nuclear non-proliferation regime across the region to safeguard peace and stability.

Participating leaders praised Egypt’s role and El-Sisi’s efforts to reinforce stability and establish peace in the region.

The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni noted that El-Sisi’s participation in this meeting underscores that peace can only be achieved through an agreement modelled after the Egypt-Israel peace treaty.

She also stressed the importance of reaching a just solution for the Palestinians.

The Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also affirmed the significant role played by President El-Sisi and President Trump in reaching the agreement to halt the war in the Gaza Strip.

El-Sisi’s participation in the 52nd G7 summit, held under the French presidency, marked Egypt’s second appearance in this high-level global gathering, with the first being at the 45th summit in 2019, during Egypt's presidency of the African Union (AU).

The president is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with participating world leaders, including a meeting with President Trump.
